Insights
Throughout my academic journey at the University of South Carolina and my professional experiences in the Sport and Entertainment Industry, I have gained invaluable insights that have shaped my leadership, career aspirations, and approach to serving others. Each classroom discussion, internship, and event has reinforced that success is not achieved by one individual, but it is built through preparation, collaboration, adaptability, and a commitment to creating exceptional experiences for every guest.

By connecting the ideas I learned in the classroom with real-world experiences at organizations including the Cleveland Guardians, Colonial Life Arena, Gamecock Athletics, S.A.F.E. Management, CSC's MLB All-Star Village, and the Savannah Bananas, I have developed a deeper understanding of what it takes to execute successful events. Behind every unforgettable fan experience is a team of professionals communicating effectively, solving problems under pressure, and working together toward a common goal.

The following insights represent the lessons that have the greatest impact on my personal and professional growth, while being with the Cleveland Guardians. They demonstrate how my education and hardwork have prepared me to become a leader within the Sport and Entertainment Industry.
Key Insight #1 - Listening is EVERYTHING!
STORY:
During my internship with the Cleveland Guardians, I received a phone call from Barry Bretz, a New York Yankees fan who had been trying unsuccessfully to resolve an issue with his tickets. After speaking with several ticketing representatives, he was understandably frustrated and unsure whether he would be able to attend the game.
Rather than rushing the conversation, I took the time to understand his concerns, explain every step of the process, and remain patient throughout the call. For more than forty-five minutes, I worked with Barry together to solve the issue of why his tickets were not appearing on his MLB BallPark App, until his tickets were successfully transferred and everything was functioning properly.
Before ending the call, Barry thanked me for taking the time to listen and later submitted a positive compliment recognizing the service he received.
What i learned:
That conversation completely changed my perspective on communication. Before this experience, I believed customer service was simply about solving problems as quickly as possible for the customer. I quickly realized that effective communication is about building trust. People often remember how they were treated far longer than the problem itself. This experience reinforced that leadership begins with listening. Whether assisting one fan or thousands of guests during an event, every interaction is an opportunity to represent an organization with professionalism and care. You must always first listen to what the problem is before you can perform any solution.
classroom connection:
One of the biggest lessons from SPTE 380 (Sports & Entertainment Marketing) is that every guest interaction influences an organization's brand and reputation. This experience demonstrated that exceptional customer service is one of the strongest forms of marketing because it builds trust, encourages loyalty, and creates memorable experiences.

This workstation served as my home base throughout my Cleveland Guardians internship and is where I answered Barry Bretz's call. Every day, I used this station to assist fans by answering phone calls through Elevate, responding to emails, communicating with teammates through Microsoft Teams, and accessing internal resources such as CRM systems and knowledge databases. These tools allowed me to provide accurate, timely solutions while collaborating with departments across the organization. This workstation represents the behind-the-scenes environment where exceptional guest service begins.

Key Insight #2 - Expect The Unexpected!
STORY:
While working at the Junior Guards membership table during my internship with the Cleveland Guardians, I experienced an unexpected emergency that reinforced the importance of staying calm under pressure. A concessions employee suddenly ran to our Junior Guards table yelling that a medic was needed immediately because her mother, who has diabetes, was overheating and felt like she was going to faint.
Without hesitation, I called my supervisor, Nolan Hopkins, and explained the situation. Nolan had Ross Genchi send me the emergency base number, which I immediately contacted to request medical assistance. While the medics were on their way, I stayed with the employee's daughter, comforted her, and reassured her that help was coming. Within minutes, emergency personnel arrived to assist the guest.
What i learned:
This experience taught me that preparation is more than simply knowing policies and procedures, but it is about being ready to respond when unexpected situations arise. Remaining calm, communicating clearly, and taking immediate action allowed me to help coordinate the appropriate response while also providing reassurance to those involved.
I also learned that everyone working an event, regardless of their position, plays an important role in guest safety. Whether assisting with memberships or responding during an emergency, every team member has a responsibility to act professionally and put people first. This experience strengthened my confidence and reinforced that effective leadership often begins with staying composed during moments of uncertainty.
classroom connection:
This experience directly connected to SPTE 203 Introduction to Event and Venue Management, where we learned that successful events require comprehensive emergency planning, effective communication, and a commitment to guest safety. Throughout the course, we discussed the importance of emergency action plans and how every staff member has a role in responding to unexpected situations.
Responding to this medical emergency allowed me to apply those concepts in a real-world setting. This experience showed me that preparation, teamwork, and clear communication are essential to protecting guests, coworkers, and ensuring events continue to operate safely and efficiently.

This is the Junior Guards membership station where I was assisting fans before the medical emergency occurred. While working here, I answered membership questions, helped families register children for the program, and assisted with event setup. This table quickly became the location where I learned that every role within event operations can shift unexpectedly. It was here that I responded to a medical emergency by coordinating with my supervisors, contacting Guardians Base, and helping reassure the employee's daughter until emergency personnel arrived.
Key Insight #3 - Create Lasting Memories!
STORY:
During one game at Progressive Field, I had the opportunity to assist my coworker, Kate, with a few seat visits for fans. As part of the experience, we surprised a newly engaged couple and presented them with a Cleveland Guardians goodie bag filled with team merchandise. Before handing them the bag, I turned to the surrounding fans and asked them to help us congratulate the happy couple. Instantly, the entire section erupted in applause, cheers, and celebration. Complete strangers came together to recognize two people they had never met, creating a moment that neither the couple nor the fans around them will soon forget.
Witnessing that shared excitement reminded me that sports have a unique ability to unite people. Fans come to the ballpark not only to watch baseball, but also to create memories with family, friends, and even strangers. I am grateful to have been part of an organization like the Cleveland Guardians that goes above and beyond to make every guest's experience at Progressive Field meaningful.

What i learned:
This experience taught me that the Sport and Entertainment Industry is about much more than hosting games. The Sport Industry is about creating moments that people remember for a lifetime. While fans come to the ballpark to watch baseball, many of their most meaningful memories are made through the experiences that happen beyond the action on the field.
Watching an entire section of complete strangers celebrate a newly engaged couple showed me the unique power of sports to bring people together. In just a few moments, thousands of differences disappeared as everyone shared in the excitement of someone else's milestone. That experience reminded me that the smallest interactions can have the greatest impact!
classroom connection:
This experience directly connected to SPTE 380 Sport and Entertainment Marketing and SPTE 440 Sport and Entertainment Business and Finance. In SPTE 380, I learned that a team's brand extends far beyond its logo or on field performance. Every interaction between an organization and its fans shapes the public's perception of the brand. Creating memorable moments, such as celebrating a newly engaged couple, strengthens emotional connections with fans and reinforces the organization's commitment to delivering an exceptional fan experience.

In SPTE 440, I learned that guest satisfaction is not only valuable from a customer service standpoint but also from a financial perspective. Positive fan experiences encourage repeat attendance, build customer loyalty, generate positive word of mouth, and contribute to the long term financial success of an organization. This seat visit demonstrated that investing time and effort into creating meaningful experiences benefits both the fans and the organization by fostering lasting relationships that encourage continued support.
